Bugs

Reasons I need bug spray and why they exist:

1) When spiders decide to build gigantic webs across the trees in my grandma's front yard, smack in the middle of the sidewalk in to the house.

This (literal) "bug" exists because there are many trees within a close distance of each other that are suitable for spiders to attach their webs off of.

2) When I have to rinse the tub several times after showering because the soap suds get stuck on the floor.

This "bug" exists because of the lack of water pressure in the shower as well as how well the drainage works.

 3) When I wake up to a cold apartment in the winter because our heater isn't working, again.

This "bug" exists because of the Nook's A/C system not having proper maintenance.

4) When I'm trying to drive home at 4 PM, but the 10-minute drive it should take to get to the highway on Archer Road takes an hour and a half.

This "bug" exists because there are limited lanes on Archer, Archer is the main road for traffic in Gainesville, and 4 PM is the start of rush hour.

5) When I'm trying to carry my trash down the stairs to the dump, but the bag rips open every time with food and unidentifiable liquids spilling all over my shoes.

This "bug" exists because of the material and strength of the trash bag, as well as the weight of the waste materials.

6) When I'm walking through the rain and the water from puddles soak through my shoes into my socks making my feet damp for the next few hours.

This "bug" exists because of the material the shoes are made out of, making them permeable to water.

7) When I try for half an hour to put my contact lenses in my eyes and they won't go in, so I end up having to wear glasses since I'm in a rush to get to class.

This "bug" exists because of the type of lens I am putting in as well as my eye's natural uncontrollable reaction to the lenses.

8) When my jeans rip as I'm running to make it to my next meeting and I have nothing to cover it up or put it back together.

This "bug" exists because of the material and make of the jeans as well as a lack of preparation for such an occurrence (i.e. having a sewing kit or jacket in one's backpack).

9) When half of the elevators at the Reitz are out-of-order (or not responding to my beck and call), so I have to wait longer or take the stairs.

This "bug" exists because of the construction and maintenance at Reitz Student Union.

10) When doors don't have push or pull signs on them, so I stand there looking stupid for a few moments trying both.

This "bug" exists because of the building's decision to not put those signs on its doors.

11) When I press the elevator button while the elevator door is closing so that I can get in, but the elevator doesn't open back up again.

This "bug" exists because of the slow connection between that button and the door which signals it to open or close.

12) When it's raining hard in Gainesville but there's barely any wind, yet my umbrella decides to turn inside out and leaves me wrestling with it whilst getting drenched.

This "bug" exists because of the design of the umbrella.

13) When my duffel bags don't stay on top of my rolling suitcase while I'm traveling through the airport, and I end up tripping and then trying to figure out a new way to stack the duffel bags.

This "bug" exists because of the shape and size of the suitcase, the forces acting against the baggage while rolling it, the lack of any restraining material keeping the bags on the suitcase, and the shapes and sizes of the duffel bags.

14) When I turn on the laptop to do something important and time-sensitive, but it decides to update itself without prior notice.

This "bug" exists because of the operating system failing to give a notification that an update will take place in the near future or asking the user if now would be a good time for an update.

15) When I'm cooking noodles and it takes a long time to drain all the water since the noodles hang on to the water for awhile (making my dish soggy if I don't wait for it to finish dripping out).

This "bug" exists because of the type of noodles as well as the technique used for draining water.

16) When my sock slides into my shoe while I'm walking, causing my ankle to rub against the shoe and get a blister.

This "bug" exists because of the material the sock is made out of and the friction of it rubbing against the shoe which pushes it down.

17) When my glasses get foggy when I move through environments of different temperature, i.e. opening the door to the humid air of South Florida after a long drive in a cold car.

This "bug" exists because of the condensation that occurs when moving between areas of different humidity.

18) When the sleeve of my hoodie that I had pushed up my arm so that I can wash my hands slips down and gets into the water coming out of the sink faucet.

This "bug" exists because of the part of the arm the sleeve was pushed up to and the lack of anything keeping the sleeve in place.

19) When I'm wearing a shirt and feel a nagging itch at my neck because of the tag for the entire time I'm wearing it.

This "bug" exists because of the existence of the tag as well as its size and material.

20) When I'm in the middle of an online quiz or writing an essay and the power goes out, causing me to lose all the work I had done.

This "bug" exists because of the lack of a back-up power box or of an automatic save mechanism.

Coming up with this list was quite difficult for me since I've lived my life with the mindset of counting my blessings since I was a little kid. For me, thinking of things that bother me in life was challenging since it's not a list I think of often. Why is that? My memory is spotty at best, so if I do not think about something again after it happens, the chances are that I won't remember it. I would remember the feeling of annoyance, but I would not remember the root cause of it. As such, it was difficult for me to remember instances that bug me.

  1. Hello Thuy Linh! I saw that you had difficulty coming up with 20 things that bug you. Personally, I don't know if it's because a lot of things bother me, but whenever something does annoy me, I tend to remember it and talk about it with my friends or family. I know for some people it's difficult to sit on the spot and come up with 20 things. I really like your mindset of counting your blessings though. Maybe that's why you don't let things get to you too much or you don't let things bother you.

  2. Hello Thuy-Linh,
It was surprising to see a lot of your bugs relating around house-keeping struggles and maintenance issues, as most of mine were technology and work related. It's great to see a new perspective on what really annoy the people around my age. We do share some bugs though. I also wear glasses so the glasses fogging up was extremely relatable, as well as the struggles of putting in contacts.

  3. Hey Thuy-Linh
Your "bugs" are very relatable and it was funny to read them on your blog because as i was making mine i did not think of these as bugs. I find it interesting how reading your post as long with others makes me realize how much "bugs" there are in our world today and we either just get used to them or forget they exist. I think the main "bug" you have that i strongly relate to is when my socks get wet from rain or rain puddles it is super annoying and disgusting.

  4. Hi Thuy-Linh,

I think everyone can relate to the problem of having water get inside of their shoes and ultimately their socks. I also enjoyed the contact lens one because that can take me longer on some days than others It would have been cool to see bugs from hobbies that you have. Other than that, I think this was a good post!

  5. Hey Thuy-Linh,
I definitely relate to having sleeves getting wet when washing hands and many more of them. Overall, your post was great. However, maybe one or two of the explanations could be elaborated onto a little more. For example, number 12 had the only "why" being "that's the design of the umbrella". Maybe it would be beneficial to continue and ask "why is the umbrella designed like that?" Other than that I really enjoyed your post.
